A Chipmunk Story

I was sitting in my living room a few days ago when my cat, Corran, wandered over and started playing with his chipmunk toy.  He was having fun, so I watched him play for a few moments … until I remembered that we don’t have a chipmunk toy.

He was playing with an actual, dead chipmunk!  I took the “toy” away from him, and I thought that was that.

A few hours later, I happened to glance inside my home office while walking upstairs.  Inside, I saw three little shapes lying in the shadows.  My first thought was that this was a dead chipmunk family.  I took a moment to brace myself before reaching for a light switch …

… and I have never felt so relieved at finding dog poop on the floor!

How did I pick my cat’s names?

I adopted both of my cats at the same time last November – they even shared a cardboard carrier when moving into my home!  So of course I had to find two names that go together.

I thought about Doctor Who names first, but which pair of companions should I choose?

Ian and Barbara?

Maybe 50 years ago.  Amy and Rory?

Too recent.  Tegan and Turlough?

They were never actually a couple.  That’s about when I remembered that everybody knows I’m a big Doctor Who fan, so nobody would be surprised if I named the kitties after Who characters.  Naturally, I thought about Star Wars next.

Han and Leia?

Too obvious.  Luke and Mara?

Now we’re getting somewhere, but people would still know where “Luke” comes from.  How about … Corran and Mirax?

I have no problem naming my kittens after a Jedi and his smuggler wife!  And as a bonus, these names are geeky enough that most “entry level” geeks won’t figure it out.

Now if only I knew somebody with a pet named Booster

When you give a cat a bed …

When you give a cat a bed, the cat will ignore the bed.  Always.

When I first adopted my kittens, I went out and bought two cat beds from a pet store figuring they would each use one bed.  I have had them for two months now and I have only seen them in the beds twice: once on the afternoon that they came home with me and then later that night.DSC_0360

So where do they sleep?  Usually not these beds.  Most of the time they either sleep on my bed or cuddle up in their cat tree.

But I have an idea for something new to try.  I finished some clementines the other day and decided to give the box to the cats.  Then this happened:

I think I’m going to put a blanket in the box and see it keeps getting used as a bed.  I hope so!  But these are cats I’m talking about, and it is very likely that they will lose all interest in the box as soon as I start calling it a bed.

Cats Playing With Water

I was brushing my teeth last night and, like usual, my cats both made their way onto the bathroom counter. They seemed curious about the water running in the sink, so I left it running a bit and watched them play. While brushing my teeth this morning I pulled out a camera and took pictures 🙂

Corran and Mirax have noticed the water!

… and Corran chooses to investigate!  (Also, I hope Mirax isn’t chewing on my toothbrush).

“I can touch it, but I can’t hold it.  What is this substance??”

I think she’s just thirsty.  I wonder if I should find an upstairs water bowl for them?
